February, the month of all things red and romantic with red, hearts, roses, and chocolates, is also a time to show our love of friends and community. Students from the German Language School of Morris County (www.njlearnsgerman.org and www.glsmc.org), took that lesson to heart and raised $1,000 for The Market Street Mission (www.marketstreet.org), a Morristown haven for the needy for more than 128 years.

“Although we are an enrichment program teaching German, we are a community and we celebrate not only the German culture and heritage but also create opportunities for our children to be connected to the community through their deeds and actions,” notes Thorsten Rosner, GLSMC’s School Board President. “Each year we ask our students to identify a group whom we can support with funds from our holiday luncheon. This year, students chose Market Street Mission.”

The German School offers a Saturday language program with classes for parents and their babies and toddlers, a pre-K through 12th grade program for native and non-native speakers, as well as continuing education classes for adults.  Students also participate in community activities including the annual fundraiser.

“We rely on the generosity of the community and grant making organizations to help us keep a food pantry full, a shelter for the homeless, emergency utility assistance and a structured program to help people who are working through substance abuse recovery,” says Executive Director G. David Scott.  “Working together we bring hope and help to the neediest in our area.”
