NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – As the end of 2020 approaches, many donors may be evaluating their year-end giving plans. After all, year-end is typically the heaviest asking season and when most donors have charitable giving top of mind. According to the National Philanthropic Trust’s 2019 Donor-Advised Fund Report the number of donor- advised funds in the U.S. has tripled over the past five years. In 2019 over 12% of individual donations made to nonprofits came through door advised funds.
What is a donor-advised fund? Simply put it is a giving vehicle which allows a donor to make a charitable donation to a sponsor agent, receive an immediate tax benefit and then make recommendations to the sponsoring agent on which charities should receive the funds. Some sponsoring agents are familiar to many, such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Community Foundation of New Jersey, to name just a few. There is a myth that donor advised funds are just for the ultra-wealthy. Consulting a financial adviser is suggested.
“Our House Foundation has received some donations consistently through donor advised funds, but it was not until a recent article came across my email that I understood there might be donors out there not realizing this was an option for their giving” states Dawn Knill, Director of Development for Our House Foundation. The email article referenced by Knill also included a free widget that can be added to nonprofit websites to help facilitate giving through a donor advised fund. The widget provides an easy way for the donor to access the login site for their specific DAF sponsor while it is top of mind. “Our goal is to make donating easy, secure and efficient for current and new donors. We hope people find this widget useful and raises awareness to those who may be looking for additional ways to support us” Dawn Knill continues.
