__________

Dear Susan:  I love the summer—we take the kids to the shore every chance we get. The problem is my skin gets so dry by mid-summer that it actually feels tight. How can I keep my skin hydrated and still enjoy the sun?

The sun and tanning is the process of leathering the skin. So hats and umbrellas are a good defense to start.  If you are in the sun, you should apply your sun screen at least a half hour before you go into the sun and apply before you get dressed so you don't miss any areas. Don't burn! Reapply sun screen every two hours and if your swimming, you should reapply every time you get out of the water.  Drink plenty of water, avoid the sun if possible from 11 to 2 pm when the sun is at its strongest.

I recommend you shower with warm water not hot and then treat your skin with an ampule to hydrate your skin, and then follow up with applying a moisturizer in the morning and at night. Choose your moisturizer carefully though--petroleum based products can actually dry your skin out further.  And lastly don't forget to exfoliate!!!

SkinDeep’s Pick: Ampules are concentrated and offer immediate results to give your skin a drink of water topically.  Our NEW Hydro RX ampoules and moisturizer hydrates your skin from the inside and out because it contains 3x the hyaluronic acid  and HY3 peptides, which provides continuous and sustainable moisture.  These products visibly reduce dryness and lines and leave skin looking fresh, youthful and silky smooth.

Dear Susan: Flip flops are made for summer but they show off my dry, cracked feet! I need a solution so I can wear my cute summer shoes without being embarrassed of my heels. Help!

It’s no surprise that the most common cause of cracked feet is dry skin. Lack of moisture creates layers of dry skin and causes callouses and over time, the skin can crack. To combat this unsightly problem, avoid heavily fragrant soaps as they are higher in chemicals and exacerbate the problem. Never use a Razor on callouses because they always take to much skin off and cause the feet to callous even more, in order to naturally protect themselves. Use a good foot file after showering to gently take away most of the callouses and leave the skin smooth to touch.

Moisturize the feet thoroughly and often.

SkinDeep's Pick: Footlogix pharmaceutical grade products are a great weapon against dry feet. This foam-based product is easy to apply and penetrates quickly and without a greasy feeling. Look for the Cracked Heel Formula and Very Dry Skin Formula for best results.

Dear Susan: After my kids’ post-pool shower, I noticed that their hair is becoming straw-like. They cry from the tangles too. Any suggestions on how to prevent “pool hair”?

Swimming is great for your body, but not your hair. Hair that feels like straw and is very tangled is hair with chlorine in it. The chlorine gets absorbed into the hair shaft and strips the hair of the natural oils, thus becoming very dry and stiff feeling.

To prevent this, make sure you wet your hair thoughtfully before you go into the pool.  Make sure you rinse with tap water very well after you get out of the pool. To get rid of chlorine in the hair already use a Clarifying Shampoo.

SkinDeep's Pick:  Nioxin Clarifying Shampoo or Oribe The Cleanse Shampoo. To give it a little more umph add a little baking soda to it and form a paste, work into hair and rinse well,  use at least one time a week while you are regularly going in a pool. Don't forget to use a conditioner. Once a week a deep conditioner as well. SkinDeep's Pick: Oribe's Signature Mask—it gives you hair a drink of water.
