__________

Dear Susan: I am interested in getting some waxing done for the first time. Does it hurt?  What should I look for in a safe wax?

I would be very selective as to where I get my waxing services  preformed. Where waxing is a concerned,  you get what you pay for, quality wax (the product itself) is very expensive.  If not done correctly you can leave the skin burned or broused and it even can remove the skin. This can be very painful.   There is good and bad wax on the market.  There are also trained and Licensed technicians and not so good technicians preforming these waxing services.

Prep for waxing is very important as well. If you are using any kind of medications for acne or anti aging you must let the wax professional know. You may not think it could make a difference in your waxing but it really does make a difference. Even over the counter Retinol or Glycolic product change your skin and will make it sensitive for waxing. So anything for acne or anti aging can make the skin more venerable and create a reaction from waxing.

PREP -Your hair growth should be at least two weeks worth or 1/8 of an inch long as well.

Try not to schedule a waxing appointment around your Menstrual cycle because at this time the waxing service can and will be a little more painful.  Avoid alcohol, caffeine and exercise right before waxing because the circulation of blood flow will make it more painful as well.

Lastly Make sure something is put on the freshly waxed area to sooth the area and keep it clean. Stay away from the sun after waxing as well.

SKIN DEEP’s PICK: Finipil is the best after waxing—it's soothing and cooling and kills bacteria after waxing. We use Organic wax that is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, which means nothing can breed and contaminate the wax,  like other honey waxes that are less costly.

__________

Dear Susan:  I am not sure what color to pick when dying my hair. How can i be sure I’m going to like the color once it’s on my head?

A proper consultation is key to a Happy client.  A lot of questions should be asked before color is applied. Its very important for a hair technician to know:

  • what chemicals are in your hair now
  • whether you have you had other color services before
  • have you had any chemical straightening for Permanent Wave?
  • Have you colored your hair before?
  • What kind of color did you use i.e., was it professional or store bought?
  • Lastly I recommend that you have a blow dry to make sure you love the color.  You will not be able to see the true color until it is dry.

Skin Deep has specialty lighting that is specially designed just for precision hair cut and coloring.

__________

Dear Susan: I’ve been reading how bad some of the chemicals in beauty products can be for you. How can I avoid using products  that have unsafe ingredients?

Here is a list of some of the top harmful Chemicals to avoid in cosmetics,  Parabens, Synthetic Colors, Fragrances that are strong and linger,  Phthalates,  Triclosan, Sodium Lauryl Sulfates, Formaldehyde,  Toluene. Look at labels, just like you look at food ingredient labels. Products do absorb in your body.  Use products that come from a Professional Spa or Salon. They are usually better quality then food or drug store products. Professional Companies take the time to train Licensed  Professionals all about their products and on who should use them and what’s in them.  A good company will take great pride in what’s in their products and how healthy they are.

Skin Deep’s products are paraben free, we use only the highest quality products and know exactly whats in our products.  Healthy result-oriented products ensure the best quality services!

October 16, 2017

Affordable housing is a complex issue that requires communication, transparency, and inclusivity, along with dedicated leadership and coordination between many levels of our local and state governments. All too often, this issue is used as a political "hot potato" which is fueled by rhetoric, unclear narratives, and partisan politics.

As a municipality, we are currently in an ...

Change is Good…Vote Peterson and Doll

I have an old favorite t-shirt. The front of it reads, “Change is Good”. On the back of it is a quote from President Kennedy that reads, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

After more than fifty years of a Republican-run town council in New Providence, I think it’s time for change. Two ...
