New Jersey Date Night: Autumn Apple Picking

September 14, 2019

New Jersey Date Night is a series on NJ Flavor by relationship writer Craig Rogers.

When you date someone not from New Jersey they might ask why we’re known as the Garden State. Typically the answer can be found with one visit to a local farmer’s market, but if doubt persists all you have to do is take them to a New Jersey orchard.

A beautiful fall afternoon becomes ...

70 Years Ago, Camden Man Became Nation's First Mass Murderer

His name, like the names of his victims, is nearly forgotten.

But what Howard Unruh did 70 years ago today in Camden, N.J. foreshadowed the insanity of mass shootings we live with today.

Insanity is the operative word here. From lockdown drills in nursery schools to bullet resistant backpacks, random mass shootings have become part of the “uniquely American” cultural ...

A Day When the Sea Was More Hostile Than the Wind or Sun

The boy struggled with a cart filled with beach stuff as he dragged it down the boardwalk. It was fish-tailing behind him and I almost told him to push rather than pull, but decided to mind my own business. I was pushing a small load myself, my sleeping grandson in a stroller.

He was with a girl a few years younger, a woman who looked to be a grandmother, and several small children. His role ...

John F.X. Keane Endorsement

September 13, 2019

To the Editor,

New Providence is a wonderful town, but it needs to be more affordable. It needs to work on sustainability and be more openly inclusive. People who work here, such as teachers, fire fighters, police officers and retailers, cannot afford to live here because real estate is so expensive. We need to put real effort into providing more affordable housing so those working in our ...

Why I Will Vote for John FX Keane

Nice Place.  Nice People. New Providence.

These few words, known by our community as our town “motto”, evoke in me a sense of both gratitude and responsibility--gratitude for having lived and raised my family in New Providence; and a responsibility to engage in pursuits that will keep this town worthy of its motto.

To that end, this November ...

And the Winner Is…Play!

September 10, 2019

I often write about current research or headlines to provide additional context to a topic in the news. Most of my articles focus on various aspects of child development, such as whether children need play, whether technology is to blame for social issues such as lack of empathy and declining manners, what is social-emotional learning and should schools teach it, and ACEs, what are the ...
