NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - New Providence Girl Scouts of Troop 40380 are working behind the scenes to make a whole-town initiative come to life. From their first Zoom call, the girls were committed to creating a great project. They ended the calls with their one-word summaries: “Exciting! Good! Interesting!” and “Tiring.” Well, they are 13.

The project is called 'Out of Many, ONE!' Which is a translation of the famous United States motto, E Pluribus Unum. The new nonprofit, New Providence - Our Community For All, is underwriting and organizing the effort. 12” X 12” squares of fabric are available free to any individual, group or club in New Providence. The recipients decorate the fabric squares with waterproof materials. The Girl Scouts and The New Providence Diversity Committee will work together to drape the big white pavilion in Centennial Park with the fabric squares joined together like bunting. The art installation will be in time to complement traditional Flag Day events on June 14, 2020.

The theme of the squares’ decoration is either: How I am surviving the isolation, or What I love about New Providence.  The girls hope that at least 300 flags are created, to mark the town’s 300th Birthday.

The Girl Scout Troop, with their leader, Anne Keller, and parents, have been measuring and cutting fabric for weeks. They put the requested squares into plastic bags with instructions for the recipient on how to decorate the square. The committee either delivers the requested squares to families’ homes or leaves them in a bin in the unlocked foyer of Borough Hall on Elkwood Avenue, with the families’ names on the bag.  Each girl has already decorated her square.

Excitement is building as they approach their goal of distributing at least 300 squares, to help mark and celebrate the town’s Tricentennial. They are within 50 squares of their goal, so they hope more and more people sign up to get and decorate a square. Sports teams, clubs, graduating seniors, families and all New Providence residents are welcome to order one or more squares, at no cost.  The deadline for return of decorated squares is June 10.  Order your own squares to decorate HERE or email:
