NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The school district communications means will from now on include social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter as well as a mobile app. Sandra Andersen, Department Head of Technology and Information Services, and Katie Mangel, District Communications Coordinator, provided an overview of the new social media platforms at the Thursday, March 12 Board of Education (BOE) meeting.

Mangel explained that the district has been working for some time to enhance its communications and is now ready to launch its own mobile app, Facebook page and Twitter account. Mangel thanked the school administration, department heads and other staff members for providing valuable feedback regarding the use of the new means of communications.

Andersen explained that the district vetted some apps that would support the district and decided to go with the School Messenger App. We developed the app to include the best information for our community, she said. The app is available at Google Play and the app store, and it can be found by searching “New Providence School District.”

The app allows the user to choose a school and get information regarding that specific school. “We tried to put forth all the information that someone would need at the touch of a button,” Anderson said. The app includes district news and the chosen school news. The icons guide the access to academic departments, athletics and arts pages. The app has a calendar and it lists all events in the district and the specific school. The counseling page, staff lists and notifications are also available through the app. PayForIt is also accessible through the app.

Mangel noted that there are 7,200 users of Facebook in New Providence alone. The district’s Facebook page is another tool to provide information about district events. The plan is to post something each day of the week. The page is a forum for “good news” highlighting classroom and club activities, awards as well as academic and athletic team success stories. The page can also be used for event announcements, videos and photo galleries.

The district Twitter account - @NPPioneers - will be used mostly by Athletic Director Vincent Carangelo. It will feature game times and locations, real time score posting etc. It can also be used for district announcements, Mangel said.
