NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Theresa Gazaway will take the reins of the New Providence Police Department starting May 1. The Borough Council unanimously appointed her to succeed retired Police Chief Anthony Buccelli at its Monday, 27 April Zoom meeting. Gazaway will be the first female police chief in Union County. She was appointed as captain in June 2017. She started her career In New Providence as a probationary patrol officer in November 1995. 

Gazaway was also appointed as the borough’s Emergency Management Coordinator for a three-year period starting on May 1, 2020.

With regard to other news  Mayor Al Morgan thanked all the borough’s emergency personnel, “our heroes”, during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic response.

The mayor and council also recognized the frontline workers by declaring specific days and weeks for their honor: They are as follows:

              Firefighter Appreciation Day – May 4

              Public Works Appreciation Week – May 17-23

              Public Safety Telecommunications Week – April 12-18

              EMS Week – May 19-26

              Police Memorial Day – May 13.

Furthermore, Councilman Robert Munoz announced that Jeremy DeMar has been appointed the new Executive Director of the Joint Dispatch Center as of April 20.
