SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY — Summit Marches On is hosting a candlelight vigil and call to action to honor the life and legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Monday, September 21st at 6:30 pm in Summit. The vigil is one of hundreds happening all over the country in response to the death of the Supreme Court Justice on Friday.
The vigil will include the Mourner’s Kaddish led by a local rabbi. Additional confirmed speakers include:
Ron Chen, University Professor, Distinguished Professor of Law and Judge Leonard I. Garth Scholar at Rutgers University, General Counsel of the ACLU and the former Public Advocate of New Jersey.
Denise Wilkerson, President of National Organization of Women (NOW), Union County Chapter
Susan Hairston, Council member, Summit Common Council
Lacey Cotter Rzeszowski, Co-Founder, Summit Marches On
Speaker list in formation.
The vigil will recognize Ginsburg's dedication to equality and justice as well as her call for the GOP-controlled Senate to resist confirming her replacement before the November election.
"We demand that the Senate not move to replace Justice Ginsburg until a new president is sworn in," says Tracy Keegan, co-founder of Summit Marches On. Early voting has already begun for the 2020 election, and Democrats are calling for the GOP-controlled Senate to uphold the rule they set in 2016 when they did not allow President Obama to nominate a Supreme Court Justice in an election year.
“Justice Ginsberg dedicated her life to the goal of a more just and fair America. She gave her life for it. As our last line of defense against what has been an incessant assault from the Republican party on our most basic and inherent freedoms, she clung to life as long as she could and fought to her very last breath,” said Co-Founder Lacey Cotter Rzeszowski. “She was a guardian of the constitution and a defender of the rights with which it bestows us. She is gone, and it is incumbent upon all of us to bear her mantle and continue her fight, in her name, her honor, her memory.”
Vigil and call to action begin at 6:30 PM.
