NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence Diversity Committee invites everyone this Sunday, June 14th 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., for their 2nd Annual Race Unity Day 2020: Voices for a Stronger New Providence. This will be a virtual event that anyone can join by registering on the link below.
Join us as we come together virtually to celebrate our differences, understand shared experiences of our neighbors through their respective lenses, and how to become a better ally. Local speakers from within our community and beyond will share their own narratives and anecdotes to help promote inclusivity, understanding, tolerance, and what it means to be an ally.
Race Unity Day (or Race Amity Day) comes from a tradition of people of different races working together and building friendship and love through relationship.
Our program will include a primer on the criminal justice system from an attorney formerly of Bryan Stevenson’s (Just Mercy) Equal Justice Initiative, a journey to becoming an ally from a local student, an interactive Q + A with New Providence resident Nikisha Hildago, and will also include addresses from Mayor Al Morgan, Diversity Committee Chairman, Sunil Abrol, and NPPD Chief of Police Gazaway. Entertainment will be provided by musicians Alton Williams and Ormond ONeal.
Please register for this event at: https://bit.ly/RaceUnity2020 to receive your link to join.
Later Sunday evening 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Park (corner of Academy St and Springfield Ave New Providence), everyone is invited to a Community Vigil for Black Lives led by local students in partnership with the New Providence Diversity Committee, and supported by Mayor Al Morgan, the New Providence Borough Council, NPPD, and the Borough of New Providence. Everyone is welcomed to attend, and encouraged to practice social distancing, and a safety-first approach. We hope to see you there!
