SPRINGFIELD, NJ -- The New Providence boys basketball team rallied from an 11-point first-quarter deficit to defeat Dayton, 55-53, Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind, 18-7, after one quarter, New Providence surged back with a 24-4 run in the second quarter to take a 31-22 halftime lead.
After that, Dayton came back with a big third quarter to close back to within one point heading into the nip-and-tuck final period. New Providence played its fourth straight game without point guard Sean Dillon, who is still out with a pulled leg muscle.
Center Carsten Schumm led New Providence with 13 points and 12 rebounds and he also blocked two shots. Nick Bisaccia scored 11 points and handed out three assists, and Will Lattman finished with 10 points and two assists for the Pioneers. Owen Kovacs contributed seven rebounds to go with eight points for New Providence.
