CRESSKILL, NJ -- The Cresskill football team employed an efficient passing attack and a productive running game to get past New Providence, 56-27, in the first round of the Section 1, Group 1 playoffs Friday night.
Cresskille (7-2) scored six touchdowns in the first half to establish a 42-14 lead. After Cresskill's first TD, Sean Michaels of New Providence (6-3) returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a TD and Owen Kovacs kicked the PAT to tie the game, 7-7.
But Cresskill scored the next four TDs on a pass, an interception return, a run and another pass play for a 35-7 lead before New Providence scored when Charlie Barth recovered a fumble in the end zone.
In the second half, the Pioneers got TDs from Jacob Wied on a 58-yard run and Kovacs on a 10-yard QB keeper.
