NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- The top-seeded New Providence girls basketball team had no trouble advancing past Palisades Park in the first round of the Section 2, Group 1 state tournament with a 46-5 decision on Monday.

Freshman Meghan Lamanna scored 13 points for the Pioneers (24-3), who scored 25 points in a row to open the game. Amy Maurer had seven points and three assists and Lindsay Kinum handed out seven assists to go with six points for New Providence. Megan Slattery led the Pioneers in rebounding with six.

New Providence advances to the sectional quarterfinals now, where they will host ninth-seeded Whippany Park on Wednesday. Whippany Park got past eighth-seeded Brearley, 39-22, in another first-round game.
