NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- The defending Union County champion New Providence girls basketball team returned its entire lineup for the current season that got under way last week.

And while the play of the guards fuels so much of the Pioneers approach, with pressure defense producing transition offense, junior Jasmine Miller plays a valuable role in helping New Providence control the glass and give the team some interior scoring and defense.

When New Providence defeated Westfield, 48-44, on Saturday in a rematch of last year's county championship game, Miller scored 12 points, came down with a team-high eight rebounds, blocked two shots, passed for an assist and came up with a steal.

The next day, she grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds in the Pioneers' 41-25 victory over Paterson Eastside.

Miller is the Joe Eberle Weichert Realtors Pioneer Athlete of the Week.

"Jas is a terrific defender around the rim, as she uses her length and reach to challenge players in the post and guards driving to the basket," New Providence head coach Cap Pazdera said. "Jas also uses her length to get rebounds on both sides of the court and is a threat to score around the basket, or if you do not come out and cover her, knock down open outside shots."**BULLSEYE

The ability of so many players on this team to perform so many roles well is a vital ingredient to New Providence's success.

Miller exhibited her ability to come through in big games last season, when she collected 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Pioneers' 57-51 victory over Rumson-Fair Haven in the Central Jersey, Group 2 semifinals.

"Jas does a great job doing what the team needs her to do no matter whether she is starting or one of the first players to come off of the bench," Pazdera said. "Jasmine has grown as a player over the last couple seasons, and we are excited to watch her continue to grow and do great things for this team."**STANDARD

Miller answered these questions from TAPinto New Providence this week.

Q: What are some of your team's goals and personal goals for this season?
A: Our team’s goal this season is to win the Union County Championship, and the Group 2 Final. My personal goal this season is to be there for my teammates and give my best in every game.

Q: Have you seen your game change since your last year?
A: Yes, I have continued to play the off-season, which has developed my confidence as a player. Being able to play with my teammates year round has helped us develop as a team and bring out the best in one another.**BULLSEYE

Q: What has been the best advice you have received from a coach?
A: The best advice I have received has probably been to always be aggressive and stay confident while playing.

Q: What has been your most memorable game to date?
A: My most memorable game to date has probably been the Union County Finals against Westfield last year. It was a great experience to be able to play in a competitive atmosphere, with local fans supporting us.

Q: What do you like most about New Providence High School?
A: Although New Providence is small, I love how many clubs, sports and activities are offered here. The community makes sure that everyone feels included and involved.

Q: Do you have a favorite subject?
A: I’ve had a few favorite subjects over the years, but this year I am really enjoying taking Sociology.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete?
A: I don’t have one favorite athlete in particular. There are so many amazing athletes I enjoy watching.

Q: Do you have a role model?
A: My biggest role model is probably my grandfather. He lost most of his vision when he was a young adult, and seeing him overcome this adversity inspires me.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not playing a sport?
A: When I’m not playing a sport I enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends.
