NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- The New Providence girls soccer team opened play in the Section 2, Group 1 tournament with a 6-0 victory over Hoboken on Monday.
Freshman Grace Kelly scored two goals for New Providence (11-6-2), which pulled away from a 2-0 halftime lead with four goals in the second half.
Sophie Mariniello assisted on two goals, with Lily Pergola, Marilyn Keating, Kyra Trumbull and Amy Maurer each scoring one goal. Juliana DeGeorge and Paola Salazar each had one assist.
Carleigh Robinson, a freshman keeper, needed to make just two saves as New Providence outshot Hoboken, 26-5. The Pioneers will play in the second, or quarterfinal, round on Thursday.
