HOLMDEL, NJ -- The New Providence boys cross-country team came in third among all Group 1 teams at the NJSIAA Group Championships at Holmdel Park on Saturday.
Leading the way was senior Christian Cadmus, who placed second among 150 Group 1 runners with a time of 16:20. Cadmus qualified individually for the Meet of Champions this Saturday back at Holmdel, although the Pioneers, as a team, just missed qualifying by placing third instead of in the top two.
"Individually, every member of the team accomplished something commendable," said New Providence boys cross-country coach Corey Arnold. "Christian's 16:20 finish makes him the second fastest Pioneer at the Holmdel course, behind only Jordan Price's 16:08 at the Meet of Champions in 2013."
Other notable performances by New Providence included Kyle Tierney, who Arnold said "bounced back from illness to run faster than he had at Thompson Park the week before and improve his Holmdel p.r. by 30 seconds." David Aprill finished third on the team in his first season of cross country after battling some mid-season knee issues, and ran 18:09 for his first race at Holmdel.
"Hayden Singer also made his Holmdel debut and ran 18:27, the third fastest freshman time of the race," Arnold said. "Jared Beaudoin improved by 1:48 from last season's group meet and Dan Aranda ran 47 seconds faster than last year."
Of particular note was the recovery Dominick Cardone made from injury to run the Group 1 race. "Six weeks ago, Dominick got out of a walking boot. In the four races he has run since then he improved in each one, dropping over one minute."
Finishing third tied the best team finish New Providence has had (also third in 2013) at the Group Championships.
"While the team was hoping to make history by finishing in the top two and qualifying for the Meet of Champions, we were happy with the overall results," Arnold said. "The whole team ran well and we are excited to cheer Christian on this Saturday."
