NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- The New Providence girls basketball team has received the second seed for the Union County Tournament, which gets under way with preliminary round games later this week.
The Pioneers, though, will have a bye and will not have a tournament game until Tuesday, Feb. 18. They will host the winner of a preliminary-round game between Roselle and Rahway.
Westfield received the top seed. Union Catholic is seeded third. New Providence split two games with Union Catholic, which is the only team to have beaten the Pioneers this winter. Oak Knoll is the fourth seed.
Following the first round on Feb. 18, the quarterfinals are schedule for Friday, Feb. 21. The semifinals are slated for Feb. 26, with the championship game to be played at Kean University Feb. 28 or Feb. 29.
Last year's Union County Tournament champion, The Patrick School, does not have a team to defend its title this year. Westfield was the 2019 runner-up.
