The New Providence Reds Baseball Team split a doubleheader with the Hawthorne Chicos to pick up their first win of the season on May 19. The Reds took game 1 over the defending league champions by a score of 3-1, but dropped game two by a score of 8-3.

A pair of recent Drew University Baseball graduates led the Reds charge in game 1, as Reds newcomer Mike Pettigrew cleared the bases in the first inning with a three-run double scoring Matt Nesto, Scott Horowitz and Joe Randazzo.

The three runs in the first inning would be all the Reds would need as Harry Cohen, also a Drew University graduate pitched a complete game to pick up his first win of the season on the mound. Cohen scattered six hits while allowing one run and striking out eight.

Randazzo reached base all three plate appearances collecting two hits and walking once. Shortstop Matt Nesto added two walks and a stolen base for the Reds.

In game two the Reds fell behind early 4-0 and could never get even with the Chicos. Eric Martin drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning to make the score 4-1 Chicos, but that would be as close as the Reds would get. Nick Sommo would also add a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning for the other Reds RBI.

The Reds will travel to Jersey City for a doubleheader against the Jersey City Rays on Sunday morning beginning at 9AM. The next Reds home game will be Sunday, June 23 with a single game against the NJ Licey Tigers at Oakwood Park beginning at noon.

The Reds are managed by Matt Sommo and Sal Nesto, both of New Providence and both former coaches on the college level.
