MORRISTOWN, NJ - Freshman Brandon Cuccaro was the hero for Governor Livingston Ice Hockey on Tuesday, February 25, as he netted the lone goal in the opening round of the NJSIAA Public B State Tournament in overtime to pull off the upset for the Highlanders over Morristown.
Morristown was a clear favorite going into the game, as they were seeded fifth, while GL was the twelfth seeded team. Morristown had defeated GL 3-1 in the two teams only regular season game and has claimed two state championships in the past six years.
The first three periods went by scoreless in the defensive battle. Sophomore Goalie Shane Cook saved 28 shots for his second shutout performance in the last four games.
With 9:26 left in the overtime period, freshman Matt Walen and freshman Brian Kramer found Cuccaro for the game winning goal, giving GL the upset win.
This is Mike Cristitello’s second season as the head coach of GL Puck, and in both years, the Highlanders have won the opening round of the state championship tournament. Despite losing in the second round last year, GL’s cohesive unit will look to make a deep run this season.
GL will play the winner of Middletown South or Whippany Park for the second round game, which will be decided on Thursday night. The location will be chosen by the winning team of Tuesday’s game.
