Former Freeholder President Britnee Timberlake was sworn in Monday to fill the seat vacated by Sheila Oliver, who became the first black woman to assume statewide office in Garden State history when she became lieutenant governor earlier this month.

Timerlake, an East Orange resident, will represent the 34th District, which includes Clifton, East Orange, Montclair and Orange.

During the Ceremony, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin spoke in glowing terms of the many accomplishments made by Timberlake as an elected official and private citizen.

During her tenure as a freeholder, Timberlake spearheaded several initiatives that aimed to improve the quality of life of Essex County residents. For example, in 2015 she drafted a law requiring banks the county holds taxpayer deposits with to come before the board to show proof of their efforts to reduce foreclosures, provide loans to entrepreneurs, assist low-to-moderate-income communities, and maintain vacant homes they own.

Aside from being an elected official, Timberlake is the founding Executive Director of a non-profit affordable housing organization  called the Essex Community Land Trust (ECLT). The ECLT strengthens communities by providing permanent affordable housing and financial empowerment opportunities for working families and individuals throughout Essex County.
