Greater Newark Conservancy: Fun for the Whole Family at Spring Block Party

NEWARK, NJ - A large assortment of flowers and vegetables. Activities and crafts for kids and families to enjoy. Community organizations showcasing their services.

It’s time to welcome the season at Greater Newark Conservancy’s Spring Block Party & Plant Sale on Saturday, May 6 from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Conservancy’s Outdoor Learning Center, 32 Prince Street in Newark between Springfield and South Orange Avenues (across from the new ShopRite of Newark).

This year's Block Party will feature cooking demonstrations by participants in the Fatherhood n Kidz Kafe Program and healthy food for sale.

Visitors will enjoy free activities like informative gardening and cooking demonstrations, family cooking classes and a Geocaching Scavenger Hunt.  Kids and adults will be able to create "kindness" rocks for the new Kindness Rocks Project rock garden in the Nelson Mandela Freedom Garden.  

The Conservancy’s Youth Farm Stand will also have fresh, locally-grown produce at affordable prices from its urban farms in Newark.

The Spring Block Party will also feature a plant sale with everything you need to get your garden started including a large selection of plants and flowers in pots and for planting, plus a wide variety of vegetables and herbs for home gardeners.

“In addition to lots of fun for the whole family, our plant sale is just in time for Mother’s Day,” noted the Conservancy’s Executive Director Robin Dougherty. “The Spring Block Party has become a much-anticipated event in Newark and we look forward to saying hello to old friends and meeting new people this year as we celebrate the Conservancy’s 30th Anniversary.”

Founded in 1987, Greater Newark Conservancy’s mission is to promote environmental stewardship to improve the quality of life in New Jersey’s urban communities through environmental education, community gardening, urban farming, beautification of neighborhoods, job training and environmental justice.
