HOBOKEN, NJ -- As part of our small business spotlight series, HomeGrown Host Stephanie Willoughby spoke with Meghan Lavelle, Owner of Washington General, to see how the store is faring during the pandemic. Washington General was featured in Part One of our HomeGrown: Hoboken episode, which aired on TAPintoTV last June.
“It’s been a whirlwind for sure,” said Lavelle. “We’re just making adjustments and we keep plowing through.” Washington General did not have an ecommerce site prior to the pandemic, so when businesses were forced to close, they had to quickly figure out the best way to keep making sales, and they turned to Instagram.
“We’re taking advantage of everything at our fingertips right now,” said Lavelle. The store is now taking orders on Instagram, and customers can browse items for sale similarly to how they browsed the store in person. “We really do have a local, loyal clientele,” she said. “The minute they found out that our doors were closed, we had an influx of people just wanting to support.”
Washington General sells items ranging from personal accessories to home goods and have started doing themed gifts, like quarantine packages and Mother’s Day boxes. “We’re kind of your go-to gift shop,” Lavelle said. “Whether you’re trying to just spruce up your home or give someone a really thoughtful gift, you can find it here with us.”
