ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - The newest football rating system that is being used to rank teams for qualification to the NJSIAA playoffs starting next season is off to a promising start. After a year of controversy about the Born Power Index, and its proprietary (and secret) formula, the NJSIAA ditched the BPI and promised transparency.
Whether the this system works or not is yet to be seen. But at least one thing it promised has been delivered, transparency.
Monday the New Jersey State Football Coaches Association released the pre-season Strength Index, which will replace the BPI, and explained how it was calculated.
The beginning Strength Index starts with last year's ending BPI score. (Same as BPI.) It then normalized the number towards a score of 60, by calculating the difference between last year's score and 60, and dividing by three and substracting from/adding to last year's final rating to come with the starting point for 2019.
So where does that leave everyone. Check out the charts below to see where the four North Jersey Interscholastic Conference leagues shape up going into the season.
And for those who are interested, we have added some of the other top North Group 1 schools in a separate table.
Additionally, the state has decided to use a "snake" in setting up playoff matchups
|North 1||North 2|
|1 vs 16||2 vs 15|
|4 vs 13||3 vs 14|
|5 vs 12||6 vs 11|
|8 vs 9||7 vs 10|
