Newark, NJ–New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced Thursday a full closure this weekend of the I-78 eastbound and westbound ramps (Exit 58A) to Routes 1&9 southbound/Port Newark as the bridge deck replacement project resumes in Newark.
Exit 58A will be closed every weekend through late 2018 beginning Friday, March 9, with detours in place on weekends starting on Friday at 6 p.m. until Monday 5 a.m. for several months.
The $26.6 million federally-funded replacement project began in February 2017 and will replace three structurally-deficient bridge decks over Routes 1&9.
The first stage of construction, which replaced the bridge decks on the Port Street ramp to Routes 1&9 Southbound/I-78 eastbound and westbound, was completed in October 2017.
The last stage of construction has already begun and includes final deck and slab installations, as well as new parapets, guiderails and lighting.
Construction is expected to be completed in late 2018 and is being completed in stages, with the majority of work done overnight or on weekends to minimize impact on motorists and marine terminal traffic.
Variable message signs and lane closure signs will be utilized throughout the project to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
