Newark is in the running to be Amazon's next corporate headquarters, one of four cities told by New Jersey officials that they have advanced to the second round for consideration to be the Seattle giant's second headquarters, according to a report put out by ROI-NJ.
Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, announced its solicitation of North American regions earlier this year in a highly-competitive selection process for its second corporate headquarters, or HQ2.
Newark, Jersey City, New Brunswick and Camden have all been asked to provide additional information regarding their bids, ranking atop a list of 20 municipalities that sent in proposals to the state’s Economic Development Authority.
After the four complete the next step of the process, the EDA will forward the proposals to Gov. Chris Christie, who will then review the applications, according to an unnamed source quoted by ROI-NJ.
The governor may then select one proposal or a combination of several, with the potential of several bids being combined into one.
Municipalities that submitted applications to the state may still apply to Amazon directly, although the applications would not have the state’s formal backing.
Last month, the New Jersey Partnership for Action (PFA) announced its plans to submit a response to Amazon’s Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a location for its second corporate headquarters.
The opportunity could bring 50,000 jobs and billions of dollars of private investment to the state.
Comprised of Choose New Jersey, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA), the Business Action Center and the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, the PFA reached out to the state’s 21 counties, requesting that each work with municipal leaders to identify locations that meet the criteria established by Amazon in its RFP.
The state has been focused on sites that meet all the main criteria set forth by Amazon, including metropolitan areas with more than one million people; urban or suburban locations with a significant labor pool with expertise in computer software development and engineering, executive management, legal, and accounting; direct access to mass transportation on site; and real estate and infrastructure to support a minimum 500,000 square feet of space that can expand over time to support up to eight million square feet.
Counties were also asked to provide an overview of the community and quality of life of the proposed location, focusing on available recreational opportunities, cultural amenities and other unique characteristics.
