Newark is one step closer to becoming Amazon’s next headquarters.

The city has been selected by Gov. Chris Christie as the state’s endorsed recommendation to be the Seattle-based retail giant’s next corporate headquarters, according to a report in ROI-NJ.

Newark now joins more than 50 municipalities nationwide that are formally bidding on the project.

Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, announced its solicitation of North American regions earlier this year in a highly-competitive selection process for its second corporate headquarters, or HQ2.

The opportunity could bring 50,000 jobs and billions of dollars of private investment to the state.

Christie is expected to make a formal announcement at 1 p.m. Monday at the Rutgers Business School and will be joined by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Sen. Cory Booker, the city’s former mayor.

Newark, Jersey City, New Brunswick and Camden—the state’s four finalists out of 20 municipalities that sent in proposals—were all asked last week by the state’s Economic Development Authority to provide additional information regarding their bids.

Christie made the decision after hearing presentations by EDA officials on the state’s four finalists last week.

All bids must be sent to Amazon by Thursday.

Other municipalities can still put forth a proposal to Amazon but would come without the state’s backing.

Last month, the New Jersey Partnership for Action (PFA) announced its plans to submit a response to Amazon’s Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a location for its second corporate headquarters.

Comprised of Choose New Jersey, the New Jersey EDA, the Business Action Center and the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, the PFA reached out to the state’s 21 counties, requesting that each work with municipal leaders to identify locations that meet the criteria established by Amazon in its RFP.

The state has been focused on sites that meet all the main criteria set forth by Amazon, including metropolitan areas with more than one million people; urban or suburban locations with a significant labor pool with expertise in computer software development and engineering, executive management and accounting; direct access to mass transportation on site; access to an international airport; and real estate and infrastructure to support a minimum 500,000 square feet of space that can expand over time to support up to eight million square feet.

Gubernatorial candidates Phil Murphy and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno have reportedly both said they will support the measure.
