NEWARK, NJ - A charter school was the highest rated in Newark by the state Department of Education (DOE), while an all-boys district school was rated one of the lowest.

The state DOE released its school performance reports for the 2017-18 school year on Tuesday, giving schools across New Jersey a score of 0 to 100. Eagle Academy for Young Men received a score of 1.15, while The Gray Charter School received a score of 95.04.

The Gray Charter School is a K-8 school. The Eagle Academy for Young Men is an all-boys' school for grades 5-8 and is a collaboration between Newark Public Schools and the Eagle Academy Foundation.

“The School Performance Reports are a tool designed to inform and empower entire communities,” said Education Commissioner Lamont O. Repollet. “Not only can they be utilized by parents, educators and the general public, but school leaders can use the reports to help identify areas in which they can better meet the needs of students.”

The rating system has its critics, and other state officials have recommended that it's just one tool for evaluating a school's quality.

Not every school was included in the state’s ranking. For example, no score exists for West Side High School but a summary report is available for it.

The scores were compiled for high schools by using four and five-year graduation rates, test scores, progress towards English language proficiency and absenteeism. The same factors were considered for K-8 schools, except for graduation rates.

Below is the state’s ranking for schools in Newark. More in-depth summaries for each school may be found online.

A note about the data: The summative rating is the percentile rank of the summative score as compared to other schools across the state with similar grade configurations (elementary/middle schools, high schools, or schools with mixed grade configurations). Summative scores are rounded to the nearest hundredth in order to calculate the summative rating percentiles.
