NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Following the appearance of former Vice President Joe Biden at the Rutgers College Avenue Gym on October 12, the university is eyeing Biden as the potential 2018 commencement speaker.

The former vice president had dropped the rumor while taking selfies with students following his appearance, according to a post on the Rutgers subreddit.

Rutgers officials confirmed on October 16 that the university was extending its offer to Biden.

“We were thrilled to welcome former Vice President Joseph Biden to Rutgers-New Brunswick last week to rally students around the It’s On Us campaign aimed at ending sexual assault on college campuses,” said university spokesperson Karen Smith.

A spokesperson for Biden declined to comment on whether he would appear at the university come May.

In 2016, then-president Barack Obama appeared as the commencement speaker, as part of Rutgers’ 250th anniversary celebration.

The ceremony happens May of every year at the High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, and brings in students from the New Brunswick, Newark and Camden campuses.

The Rutgers Board of Governors, which selects the commencement speaker, typically makes that decision in February.

“The Rutgers Board of Governors votes to confirm the commencement speaker each year,” Smith said. “We eagerly await Vice President Biden's decision to set that process in motion.”

Several thousand students showed up for Biden’s “It’s On Us” campaign rally, aimed at ending sexual assault on college campuses.

Biden has toured at dozens of colleges across the country since launching the campaign in 2014.
