Newark, NJ – September 23, 2019 – Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ), a nonprofit law firm helping underserved individuals and families across New Jersey, is pleased to announce their honorees for the 2019 Arts and Eats for Justice gala. VLJ will honor Eisai Inc. and The Giantomasi Family—Francis J. Giantomasi, Gemma Giantomasi Diaco, and Francis M. Giantomasi.

Arts and Eats for Justice is VLJ’s annual gala. This year, the event will take place on November 13th at the Valley Regency in Clifton. The emcee will be Paul J. Fishman, Partner at Arnold & Porter and former US Attorney for the District of NJ and Paula Franzese, professor at Seton Hall University School of Law, will speak. Arts and Eats for Justice is a celebration of how VLJ staff, volunteers, funders, and community partners work together to transform the lives of low-income and vulnerable clients in New Jersey. Honorees are selected for their commitment to VLJ’s mission.

Eisai, Inc. is a leading global research-and-development-based pharmaceutical company, whose corporate philosophy reflects their commitment to the communities they serve. For the past four years, Eisai has partnered with VLJ to bring a free estate planning legal clinic to cancer survivors and veterans who need basic documents like powers of attorney, wills, and medical directives. Eisai’s attorneys and staff are dedicated and compassionate advocates who make access to justice a priority.

Francis J. Giantomasi, Gemma Giantomasi Diaco, and Francis M. Giantomasi work at the West Orange law firm Shahinian & Giantomasi PC and are among VLJ’s most ardent supporters. For the Giantomasis, a commitment to providing legal justice for vulnerable communities is a family affair. Gemma served on VLJ’s Board of Trustees for five years and not only started VLJ’s young professionals committee, but she was an innovative leader of the group. Francis M. is a strong supporter of VLJ and our events, and his dedication to improving access to justice goes back to his law school days. Francis J. has championed efforts to promote the provision of free legal services, served as an emcee for VLJ’s Arts & Eats for Justice dinner, and spent his career advocating for the advancement of Newark and its residents.

Cathy Keenan, Executive Director of VLJ, says, “I am honored to recognize the exemplary efforts of Eisai Inc. and the Giantomasi family for their positive impact on access to justice issues in New Jersey. Without the outstanding work of Eisai, Francis J. Giantomasi, Gemma Giantomasi Diaco, and Francis M. Giantomasi, VLJ would not be able to provide critical legal services for thousands of New Jersey families each year.”
