Auditions for Maplewood Strollers' "Working: The Musical"

The Strollers seeks a multi-ethnic cast for its fall production of "Working: The Musical," from the book by Studs Terkel; adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso with additional contributions by Gordon Greenberg; with songs by Craig Carnelia, MickiGrant, James Taylor, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Stephen Schwartz.

All roles open and available! Casting 10-12 core principals and 2-4 dancer/singers of all ethnicities, genders, ages, shapes and sizes for this truly ensemble musical where all principals will play multiple roles.

Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with the American workforce, Working is a delightfully funny and thoroughly touching musical. It is a both an exploration of the individuals’ occupations and a lament for lost hope and dreams. It takes the viewpoint of an average worker—such as a waitress, a trucker, a housewife, or a fast-food delivery boy—whose life and aspirations reflect the diversity that is America.

To audition, come prepared to sing 32 bars of a song (from Working or another musical) that shows off your voice quality, vocal range and personality. Bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. You will also learn a simple dance/movement combination, so dress accordingly.

Those called back will be asked sing something from Working and read from the script. Sheet music and sides for the callbacks will be available beforehand.

Performance dates: Fri & Sat, Nov. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 at 8pm; Sun, Nov. 10 and 17 at 2pm

Rehearsals: From Sept. 3, three to four times per week, in the Maplewood area

Where Do We Start the Larger Conversation About Guns?

Let's talk about our rights and our freedoms.

How many were free to shop at a Wal-Mart last two Sundays ago without fear that El Paso copycat would announce himself with the staccato fire of an AR-15?

You saw the stampede in the theater district in New York City when a motorcycle backfired. And the evacuation of a Wal-Mart in Union because of a false report.

We may have freedoms, but ...

Rolling Stones in the Meadowlands: NJ TRANSIT Got It Right – Again!

NJ TRANSIT got it right – Again – during both of the Rolling Stones concerts held in the Meadowlands this month. Kudos to the agency and to the Governor’s office for stepping up again to find solutions to a very difficult situation.

When the Agency gets it right – it’s expected, and no one applauds. Of course, when issues occur, the Agency is challenged and too ...

Sprinkle this on Your Watermelon: Chile Lime Salt

August 18, 2019

Give the sweet summer watermelon a whole new flavor profile with chile lime salt.

Marty Silverman, manager of Savory Spice Shop in Westfield, said the shop’s Peruvian Chile Lime Seasoning is a big seller.

The lime adds brightness and the chile gives the fruit it a savory kick. But don't underestimate the importance of salt in the combo.

“Growing up, my dad, brother and I ...

Opinion: New teacher pay scheme is detrimental to Newark teachers and students alike

August 20, 2019

In 2012, Newark Public Schools did something remarkable. The district reached an agreement with the Newark Teachers Union that would fundamentally shift how teachers are not just evaluated but paid.

Then-Gov. Chris Christie and Randi Weingarten, the President of the American Federation of Teachers, announced the groundbreaking deal together on national television. At the time, my ...

Newark’s Water Crisis is As Much about Lack of Vision and Courage As It Is About Mismanagement and Malfeasance

August 19, 2019

Everyone knows it has always been a coveted desire to privatize Newark’s Water Department. The money such an agency would generate would be massive and would invite corruption. If you don’t believe me just look at what happened under the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation.

In 2013, an investigation by a State Comptroller revealed that there was ramped ...

The Jaffe Briefing - August 20, 2019

COLTS NECK – First, a word from America’s lousiest tipper. You may recall how state Sen. Declan O’Scanlon went on social media to out a customer at a Colts Neck restaurant who tipped only 74 cents on a $119 tab. Now, the tipper is telling the Asbury Park Press that he would have tipped even less, if that is possible. Even just a penny!  And why? The guy ...
