NEWARK, NJ -- Barclays awarded $25,000 to the Newark City of Learning Collaborative to extend college and career preparatory programming into the summer for Newark high school students.

Approximately 50 rising high school seniors and juniors receive college prep and career development programming that integrates writing development, arts and social justice, and community service.

“The Summer Leadership Institute sponsored by Barclays is an amazing opportunity for our students to use their summer wisely by engaging in early college and career preparation,” said NCLC Executive Director Reginald Lewis. “We are extremely grateful to Barclays for making this possible for Newark youth.”

Support from Barclays allows NCLC to extend the College Pathway Initiative beyond the school year to include a five-week summer program.

In addition to providing funding for the summer institute, the multinational bank and financial services company hosted students at their corporate campus in Whippany, New Jersey.

Barclays staff facilitated mock interviews for students, shared personal career stories, and gave tips on professional networking.

Since 2017, the College Pathway Initiative recruited Newark 10th graders who remain with the program through graduation and the transition to college.

The first class of CPI fellows graduated from high school this year. About 90% of graduates start college this fall.
