NEWARK, NJ - About 5,000 toys were given to children last year at the CityPlex 12 movie theater, and the Believe in Newark Foundation expects an even bigger turnout this year.
Santa, elves and raffles will be on hand at the same theater on Dec. 23 from 12 to 4 p.m. The foundation collaborated with city officials, including Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica McIver and Mayor Ras Baraka, to host the giveaway.
“We want parents, guardians, people with children who may not necessarily be able to go out and purchase a lot of toys for the season, to let them know that this is something we want to do to help them,” said Believe in Newark Foundation Board Secretary Nancy Crawford.
This is the fifth year the Believe in Newark Foundation has given out toys to residents in Newark. The nonprofit -- which helps support residents through youth and literacy initiatives, scholarships and more -- partnered with sponsors to purchase the toys.
Toys will be given on a first come, first serve basis. The event is only open to Newark residents. No registration is required, but residents must show identification and have a child with them in order to receive a toy.
The foundation is still collecting toys for the event. To donate, contact the Believe in Newark office.
