Newark Public Library announced today that is closing its doors on Monday and will remain closed through March 28.

The closures will affect the main library as well as all branches in the city, Interim Library Director Thomas J. Alrutz said in an email to TAPinto Newark this afternoon.

The library closure coincides with the shuttering of Newark Public Schools, which is requiring students to continue learning virtually.

Many students use the library as a resource, especially those who do not have internet access at home. Only 68 percent of homes in the city have broadband internet subscription between 2014-18, according to the U.S. Census.
