WAYNE, NJ – It is estimated by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection that in 2019 – the latest year of published statistics - Wayne Township disposed of over 52,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), what we call garbage. Passaic County disposed of nearly 475,000 tons of MSW. And approximately 980 million tons of waste from the state of New Jersey was transported and disposed at landfills or incinerators – just in one year.

And these numbers trend higher each year as the population increases.

There is now an alternative to dumping trash in ever-expanding landfills or incinerating garbage then dumping the toxic, dangerous, contaminated ash at the nearest landfill as the final resting place, forever.

Wayne-based MBL Technology, LLC and their Consortium of Global Partners have created a total solid waste solution that will process Passaic County’s waste into a consistent, inert, safe, odorless and useful “feedstock/fluff” which is environmentally friendly and can be converted into renewable building products, fuel cubes for co-generation facilities, road material or construction site fill.

“No more will our garbage continue to accumulate and threaten the environment,” said MBL CEO, Matt Linda. “Instead, our waste can be safely converted, and used for something positive. This is the definition of true recycling and Passaic County, which has an excellent recycling percentage under the leadership of Passaic County Solid Waste and Recycling Director, Nina Seiden, can benefit even more.”**BULLSEYE

Approximately 99% of materials in any random garbage bag sent to be disposed in Passaic County can be processed and re-used with the MBL process, including all recycling materials like plastics, glass, cans, newsprint and cardboard.

Across New Jersey, the rate of recyclable materials actually getting recycled are not nearly as high as the state would like them to be.**STANDARD

A press release from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, dated February 2022, shared this statistic: “New Jersey’s municipal solid waste recycling rate exceeds the national recycling rate average of 32 percent but is below the state’s municipal solid waste recycling goal of 50 percent.”

This means that more than half of our recyclable waste materials are ending up in landfills or incinerators.

Matt Linda, a lifelong Passaic County resident, who grew up in Paterson and has been living in Wayne for the last six years, wants his home county to be the first in New Jersey to implement this cutting-edge technology and lead the state in saving our planet and environment for the next generation and beyond.**BULLSEYE

And what would this cost Passaic County?

“MBL does not require any financial help or contribution from the Passaic County Board of Commissioners, Governmental Agencies or the residents,” said Matt Linda. “In fact, MBL Technology would pay Passaic County a ‘host fee’ to set up a facility and begin processing their trash.”

Passaic County Commissioner Terry Duffy has known Matt Linda for many years and has a basic familiarity with the technology. He described MBL as on “the cutting edge of solving the world’s garbage problem.”

Commissioner Duffy, in an interview with TAPinto Wayne, mentioned Wayne Township’s recent issues with their recycling service, and the skyrocketing costs.

“Look at what happened to Wayne with recycling,” he said. “It gets to be a monopoly. If there are only two companies in the state with the wherewithal to be able to service the towns and communities, then we are at their mercy money-wise with their fees. Historically they've beaten the towns up and there's no avenue to get away from it.”

“Now this might be an avenue to switch it and turn things around, with this new technology,” added Commissioner Duffy. “Listen, the concept is a home run. So, I'm all for it. Whenever we can save taxpayer money, and it's good for the environment, it's good for me.”

Speaking of the environment, Anthony Fontana, the Bureau Chief of Solid Waste Processing for the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, is also familiar with MBL Technology, but hasn’t had a complete investigation of their system. The reason why…

“I do permit work,” explained Fontana. “We would need somebody to apply for a permit to do it, and then we would evaluate the entire application, the technology, the location, etc.”

He believes that MBL’s technology can be a game-changer once proven, and feels that it hasn’t caught on yet, because “there are some high hurdles you have to clear in order to - even if you're paying for the technology - get it going.”

He said that it was just a lot easier for municipalities and counties to contract with an existing hauler to take waste away. But with the costs for these services going up dramatically, it may push local governments to give new technology that will save them money, and perhaps save the environment, a chance.

All that’s needed to implement this technology and begin to change the way waste is processed in New Jersey, is for a municipality and a county to take a chance.

But if MBL can save the county money, and solve our garbage problem, what risk is there?

There are currently 12 landfills in New Jersey. A couple are nearing capacity, while the rest have the ability to expand as they get to their initial capacity. But anyone living downwind from a landfill, would not want any expansion. Burning trash in large incinerators is not exactly environmentally friendly and the ash itself gets hauled off to landfills.

“The [garbage] problem is here, and it's not going away,” said Commissioner Terry Duffy. “It’s only going to get larger and larger. We have to do something, so why wouldn’t we look at this?”

Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano spent some time with Matt Linda discussing MBL’s vision.

“It was a pleasure meeting with Mr. Linda,” said Vergano. “His technology is certainly exciting, and he has a great concept. I hope that he can bring it to fruition because we would absolutely send our garbage to his facility.”

When asked why, the mayor replied, “Because it's much better for the environment than what's being done with garbage today. This would prevent our garbage from going into landfills, and I think that’s a great thing.”

Vergano said he would speak with County Commissioner Terry Duffy and Pat LePore about the project and has a meeting in two weeks with the new County Administrator Matthew Jordan, “because this would be something great for the county, along with the 16 municipalities.”

“We would be happy to be the first in New Jersey to send our garbage to this facility,” added Vergano. “Instead of our garbage going into landfills, it can be turned into something useful… that’s a home run.”

Creative Director and MBL Technology Member Ingrid Patois ABR, SRES is an agent with Weichert Realtors, and she is currently looking for approved properties to construct a state-of-the-art MBL waste processing facility in Passaic County. They need a 20-acre site with access to Route 23, I-287, I-80 and Route 46 to build the first true MSW processing facility in New Jersey.

There are economic benefits offered to whichever community is chosen, beyond the creation of 120 new job opportunities. MBL will offer educational classes regarding recycling habits, educational tours of MBL’s facility and annual scholarships for two (2) students selected by the Passaic County Board of Education annually to a City College within Passaic County, New Jersey.

Just about everyone has seen videos of the tons of trash floating in our oceans. The plastics in the debris are leeching chemicals into the ocean and sea animals are suffering because of it. With this technology, there is no reason for this to continue.
