NEWARK, NJ - An arrest was made in connection with a car crash on St. Patrick's Day that killed a Newark man.
Mark A. Burney Jr., 20, of Newark, was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and assault by auto in the crash, which killed 43-year-old Eric Smith, of Newark, acting Essex County Theodore N. Stephens, II announced today in a news release.
The prosecutor's office said that Burney was driving a Dodge Charger around 1 a.m. on March 17 in the area of Springfield and Clinton Avenues when he struck and killed Smith. Smith was driving a Chevy Monte Carlo. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in Burney's vehicle was also seriously injured in the crash, according to Assistant Prosecutor Adam Wells. Wells is handling the case.
