NEWARK, NJ - Eleven men and one woman were arrested in a prostitution sweep on Friday in the city’s North Ward, authorities said.
The police division's Vice Task Force led an operation on July 26 in the area of Broadway and Irving Street near the Belleville border, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. Police added that citizen complaints led to the arrests.
“We arrested 11 men and one woman for soliciting prostitution,” said Ambrose in a statement. “This is a quality of life problem. We don’t want our residents to have to endure this activity in their neighborhoods and outside their homes.”
Santos Auceda, 43, and Oscar Calderon, 47, both of Belleville, were arrested in the sting, as well as North Arlington residents William J. Hannon, 55, and 50-year-old Thomas M. Byrne. The seven Newark men who arrested were Cedric Gordon, 57, Carlos Munoz, 24, Melvin Serrano, 46, Ivan Navarro, 48, Ricardo A. Rivera, 22, and Peter A. Torres, 47, and 39-year-old Jamar Zeigler.
Cherish Albawanch, 39, of Verona was also arrested, police said.
