NEWARK, NJ - A city police officer is being commended for saving the life of a 50-year-old shooting victim 

Police officers responded to a call about a shooting around 11 a.m.Tuesday on the 400 block of 16th Street. When they arrived, Police Officer Michael J. Sosa applied a tourniquet to the victim while awaiting the arrival of EMS. The victim, who was not identified by police, was taken to University Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Sosa, who works in the 4th precinct, was lauded by Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

“Our aim is to treat the people we serve the way we want our own family members to be treated,” Ambrose said in a statement. “Officer Sosa did just that. Because of his actions, and those of the other officers involved, this victim’s life was spared.”

Ambrose said the department is seeking the public’s help as detectives continue to investigate the incident.
