NEWARK, NJ - Residents will get the chance next Tuesday during the 35th annual National Night Out event to meet first responders and enjoy family-friendly activities at West Side Park.
Attendees will enjoy free food, music, bouncy rides, a dunk tank, and rock-climbing show. A classic car show and Sparky the Fire Dog will also be on hand.
The city's police division will display its Emergency Services Unit and equipment, police horses, motorcycles, boat and bomb truck. Firefighters will show off their command vehicle, HAZMAT truck and a vintage fire engine too.
National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention awareness event that is endorsed by the National Association of Town Watch. It’s designed to generate support for anti-crime programs and strengthen police-community relationships.
More than 2 million people across 400 municipalities in 23 states participated in the first National Night Out event in 1984. The event has only grown and expanded to more communities since then.
The event will run from 2 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the park's 16th Avenue and South 15th Street entrance.
