  • Stella Dunn- School Board President (judged last year’s contest as well)
  • Hon. Daniel G Flynn- Mayor of Newton
  • Donna Nixon- Branch Manager, PNC Bank

There were seven contestants in all, five for Little Miss Newton and two for Little Mister Newton. Five of the seven were returning competitors from the 2015 competition.

Little Miss Newton contestants went first. Sierra Arfken, Liliana Flynn, Jordan Fogelson, Grace Lippe, and Emily Rossi were each escorted individually up to the stage to answer three questions from Russo. The questions were:

  • What is your favorite place to go in Newton and why?
  • What is your best friend’s name and what do you like to do together?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up?

Each of the girls had similar answers, saying they enjoyed playing at “playgrounds and parks” with their friends or “doing craft projects”. Rossi said her favorite place in Newton was “my house, because I like to play in our swamp.”

Arfken said she wants to be a hip-hop teacher when she grows up, while Flynn said she wants to be a doctor. Both Fogelson and Rossi want to be veterinarians and Lippe wants to be a teacher.

The boys, Aidan Card and Barry Mayfield Jr., went next, answering the same questions from Russo. Card said his favorite place to go was the “Firehouse because my mom works there” and he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up.

Mayfield Jr. said he likes to “go to the park and play with friends” and he wants to be a wrestler when he grows up. Both boys like to play at the park with their best friends.

The contestants were judged on personality, appearance, and poise, along with the three questions they were asked to answer in front of the judges.

The votes were counted by Alexa and Jennifer Dodd and after a brief intermission which included a few promotional ads from Russo about town and pool events throughout the summer, the winner was announced.

Little Mister Newton was announced first. The 2016 Little Mister Newton is Barry Mayfield Jr. After Little Mister Newton received his scepter and sash, the 2016 Little Miss Newton winner was announced as Liliana Flynn, who received her crown and sash from Zariah Moore.

Mayfield Jr. is a 7 year-old first grader at Merriam Avenue School.  He is currently playing baseball for the Newton Lackawanna Rookie Thunder team, and a Tiger Cub member in the Boy Scouts. He has a younger sister Olivia. He loves dinosaurs, drawing and playing with his dogs. He looks forward to the summer to go swimming.

Flynn is a kindergartner at Merriam Avenue School where she loves reading, writing, and being silly with her friends. She was presented an Enthusiastic Reader award and was nominated for the same award at the state level. Flynn plays for the Newton Soccer Club and tumbles at Giant Gymnastics. As a member of Newton Daisy Troop 6648, Flynn is exploring what it means to serve her community and live by the Girl Scout Law.

All contestants received a goodie bag and a balloon for their participation in the event. There were refreshments and cookies available after the contest was over.

Little Miss Newton and Little Mister Newton were required to be at Newton Day this year and are invited to numerous events throughout the year such as the Holiday Parade, Annual Tree Lighting, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Memorial Day Parade, and many others.Little Miss & Little Mister Newton 2016
