NEWTON, NJ—Newton resident, Steven J. Witzl was arrested after striking a utility pole on West End Avenue.
Newton Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on West End Avenue on April 15 at 5:35 p.m. Witzl, age 18, was proceeding eastbound on West End Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle. He crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a utility pole on the westbound shoulder.
While Witzl was uninjured, his 19 year-old male passenger was transported to the Newton Medical Center by the Newton First Aid Squad for complaint of pain to his shoulder. No further information on the passenger is known at this time.
After an investigation, Witzl was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, careless driving, failure to keep right, and assault by auto.
Witzl was processed and released pending a court appearance on April 28. The damaged utility pole was replaced by JCP&L and Witzl’s vehicle was towed from the scene by D&E Service.
Investigating officers were: Ptl. Mahir Kaylani, Ptl. Daniel Finkle, Ptl. Thomas Tosti, and Sgt. Scott King.
