NEWTON, NJ – The newly refurbished Newton Pool served as the backdrop for a Meet and Greet event hosted by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Newton.  Approximately 50 people, local business owners and town officials, took advantage of the pleasant evening on Monday getting to know each other.

GNCC President Mel welcomed everyone to “the first post-COVID event.”

Town Manager Thomas S. Russo Jr. reported activities and projects in the Newton community. He spoke about

  • Grant funding to increase and improve sidewalks,
  • Negotiations for a renewal of a five-year agreement with Atlantic Health,
  • A luxury condo project in the works at 56 Paterson Avenue,
  • "Wayne McCabe’s Farm Store" project,
  • Redevelopment of the G&H Property that is reported to include Starbucks and Chipotle,
  • McGuire Property housing project getting underway,
  • Thorlabs reconfiguring the Camp Illiff property and constructing a 150,000 square foot building that will employ from 300 to 500 people,
  • Two grant funded sidewalk projects including near the Walgreens,
  • A Department of Transportation Streetscape grant for Diller Avenue,
  • With the completion of the pool, the focus is turned to drainage on the Babe Ruth fields at Memory Park.

“For the 12 years I have been the town manager we have completed $250 million in projects,” Russo said.  “I take the responsibility very seriously.” 

With music provided by High Profile Events DJ Brian Murphy, the attendees had a box dinner of chicken or a sandwich, coleslaw and chips.  Raffle prizes were handed out and a 50-50 had a prize of $145.
