Halsted Middle School Music Department Presented “Happy Holidays” Concert

NEWTON, NJ—The Halsted Middle School music department, presented their annual holiday concert.  On Wednesday, December 8,  the 67 fifth graders, 47 sixth graders, 39 seventh graders, and 51 eighth graders, took to the stage to share their gifts of music.

Seven groups of students sang and played holiday songs for fellow students, parents, families and teachers alike in the Newton High School auditorium.

The choir groups, led by Jessica Muccilli, included the concert choir, symphonic choir and chorale, while the band groups, conducted by Kara Hartzell, included the concert band, jazz band and symphonic band. There was also a combined ensemble of the bands and choirs.

Concert choir sang “Cantate! Sing Allelulia!”, “Harambee: A Song for Kwanzaa”, and “A Holiday Hand Jive.” The Chorale sang “Carols Around (And a round)” and “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town”.

Symphonic choir sang “A Merry Fa La La (A Christmas Madrigal)”, “Ho, Ho, Watany (Sleep, Sleep, Little One), an Iroquois Lullaby", “The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth”, and “Jingle Bell Rock”.

The concert band played “Ascension”, “Jingle Bells” and “Hanukkah is Here”. The Jazz Band played “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch”, “A Child is Born”, “Feliz Navidad” and “Rock on Merry Gents”.

The symphonic band played “Celebrate the Season, Fanfare on ‘Joy to the World’”, “Dreidl Adventure”, “The Nuts and Crackers Sweet” and “Celtic Bell Carol”. The combined ensembles, joined by the audience sang the final song of “Happy Holidays”.

There were solos from choir and band members. The following members had either one or multiple solos throughout the performances:

  • Christian Blakely, Cassie Carovillano, Jillian Faines and Madison Latimer- “The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth”
  • Cecelia Paparella-Tenor Saxophone, Anthony Martinez-Trumpet, and Kyler Kane-Drum Set- in “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch”
  • “A Child is Born” featured Ryan Penny-Vibraphone
  • Group Solo: Elissar Abou-Jaude, Andrew Manni, Vincent Manni, Christopher Martinez, Brian McKeown, and Cecelia Paparella- in “Feliz Navidad”
  • “Rock on Merry Gents” featured Chris Martinez-Alto Saxophone and Dana Catalano-Drum Set
  • Anthony Martinez and Ryan Penny in “Santa Claus is Comin’ to town”

Sparta High School Book Drive for Reach Out and Read

Sparta High School is holding a Children's book drive. All books collected will be donated to Reach Out and Read, an organization which donates books to pediatricians who give the books to patients who cannot afford them.

Drop off boxes can be found in the Sparta High School Media Center from Wednesday 2/21 to Monday 2/26.
