NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School field hockey team lost to Belvidere 2-1 on Tuesday, when they played them on the road.

Newton went into the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1, tournament as the sixth-seeded team on Tuesday they played in the quarterfinal round against third-seeded Belvidere and lost in overtime.

 “We held them off well defensively,” said Head Coach Lisa Bechtel. “We needed to score sooner, but the girls played their hearts out, I am proud of them.”

Angela Melillo scored the only goal for Newton with an assist by Jade Luciani. Abby Berkowitz, keeper for Newton had 24 saves throughout the tournament game, since Belviere outshot Newton 30-5.

The Braves end their season with an overall record of 9-8 and a conference-division record of 4-2, taking second place in the division.
