NEWTON, NJ—Lauren Barbato led the Newton field hockey team to a 6-0 shutout victory over Kittatinny on Wednesday, when they played them at Palmer Field.
“The girls came out with a strong energy and scored three goals in the first half,” Head Coach Lisa Bechtel said. “They did a good job of moving to the ball in the first half. They worked hard as a team and adjusted to different positions on the field due to some injuries of other teammates.”
Barbato had a hat trick, contributing three of the six goals Newton scored. Victoria Docherty, Autamn Kerr and Rachel Sturchio each contributed one.
Morgan Mendel contributed with two assists along with Dominique Simeone, Carly DeIorio, Sturchio, and Docherty who each had one assist.
Newton completely out shot Kittatinny 26-5 leaving Abby Berkowitz, goalie for Newton with five saves for a shutout.
“Carly DeIorio played a new spot in the middle of the field and did an outstanding job. Lauren Barbato had a hat trick, Jen Papis had a stick stop save and Abbey Berkowitz gained another shutout. Another total team effort,” Bechtel said.
The Newton High School Lady Braves Field Hockey team move their record overall to 7-4 and their conference record to 4-1.
“We play High Point Friday and Sparta Saturday,” Bechtel said. Friday’s game is home on Palmer Field beginning at 4 p.m. and Saturday’s game is also at Palmer Field beginning at 10 a.m.
