NEWTON, NJ—The screams erupted as the entire Newton Braves Football team tackled sophomore Robert McCullough on the field after his game winning field goal Friday at Lenape Valley High School.
With the Braves down 7-0 going into the fourth quarter, the team was able to rally and pull off a stunning win against the second ranked Patriots..
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Dylan Bailey scored the Braves only touchdown on an eight yard toss from Aaron Fantasia.
McCullough added an extra point bringing the game to 7-7. As the time ran down to just 0:04 on the clock in the fourth, McCullough booted a 22-yard field goal for three points and the win.
Offensively, Jack Young led Newton with a total of 115 yards in the air and 59 yards on the ground. Ryan Pappas grabbed three passes for a total of 60 yards. Fantasia had two catches for 22 yards.
Payton Nolan and Dylan Baily were busy on both sides of the ball. Nolan caught a 21-yard pass and had 14 tackles. Baily snagged two passes for 12 yards and the TD and had six tackles including a sack.
Defensively, Matthew May had two sacks and Braydon Nolan had 14 tackles against rival Lenape Valley. Jack Young was busy with nine tackles.
The Braves move their undefeated record to 2-0 as they look ahead to take on Chatham on Newton’s turf field on Friday, October 30, with a 7 p.m. kick-off.
