NEWTON, NJ - Merriam Avenue  School students had a beautiful morning to walk to school on Monday.  In what has become a new tradition with the elementary school, nearly 50 students and their parents were escorted by Newton Police officers along with some district administrators and school staff in a walking train from the town hall to the school.

Some gathered at the town hall, others joined in along the route that took approximately 30 minutes.

There were smiles all around enjoying one of the first mornings that looked and felt like spring.  This is the third year of the walk to school program which has at times been opened to include bicycles.

In the spring of 2015, Merriam was honored with a Bronze Level Award at the Trans Options Recognition event, in recognition of their dedicated efforts. The popular event has been organized by Merriam Avenue School teacher Linda Salerno since 2014.
