NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School baseball team easily defeated Dover 11-1 in the preliminary round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament on Monday.
Two newcomers to the team, Justin Mayhood and Alex Stone led the Braves to victory over the Tigers.
Mayhood went 2-for-3 at bat, scoring one run and three RBIs. Stone went 2-for-4, also with three RBIs.
Michael Luzzi, contributed a perfect 2-for-2 on a double and a stolen base, with one run scored, two RBIs.
Chase Cramer, went 2-for-3, scoring three runs, with one RBI, a double and a stolen base, while Aldo Vallorosi went 3-for-4, scoring two runs and Luke Young went 2-for-4 adding two runs to the final score.
Alex Blanar, was on the hill for all six innings for the Braves. He walked four and allowed one run on four hits with one error on 94 pitches.
Overall, the Braves had 20 at bats putting together 13 hits, nine runs, nine RBIs, two doubles, two walks and two stolen bases.
The Newton High School baseball team is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the league division. They move into the first round of the tournament as the fifth seeded team to host 20-seeded South Hunterdon on Wednesday, April 19, at memory Park. The time has yet to be announced.
