NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School boys baseball team continued their winning streak as they beat Sparta 5-4 on Friday, and Lenape Valley 2-1 on Saturday.
Luke Young led the Braves as he went 2-for-3 at bat with one RBI and one run scored himself, while Jake Tarabokija and Chase Cramer each went 1-for-2 at bat.
Tarabokija was hit by a pitch, while Cramer walked and got a stolen base. Justin Mayhood, catcher for Newton went 1-for-3 at bat.
In the Lenape Valley game Billy Carson went the distance for Newton allowing only one run on seven hits. He had 75 pitches that game.
Mayhood led the Braves in their home opener against Sparta. He went 2-for-2 at bat with one run scored and one RBI.
Carson went 2-for-3, along with Cramer, and Jimmy McKeown. Cramer and McKeown each had one RBI.
Dylan Testa and Young both went 1-for-3 and each batted in one RBI for Newton. Carson scored one run himself as well.
Newton had three pitchers against Sparta. To start off the game was Gianni Pereira, pitching 48 balls in 2.1 innings, allowing two runs off two hits, with two errors, and allowed four walks and struck out one.
McKeown then pitched four innings for Newton, getting 63 pitches in. He allowed two runs off of five hits with two errors, one walk and two strike outs.
Also pitching for Newton was Young, who only pitched 0.2 of an inning, getting in 11 pitches and allowed no runs off of one hit.
The Braves currently lead the NJAC-Colonial league with a 1-0 league record and a 4-1 overall record as they look ahead to take on Jefferson away on Wednesday, April 18, beginning at 4 p.m.
