NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School baseball team played away against Mount Olive on Friday, May 18 and won 8-6.
Logan Sweeny came out of the dugout against Mount Olive to lead Newton in their victory. He went 1-for-2 at bat, got one homerun and batted in three RBIs.
Senior, Jake Tarabokija, went 2-for-3 at bat, scoring three runs and batting in one RBI. He also got the only Newton stolen base throughout the game.
Luke Young was the other Brave to hit a homerun. He went 1-for-4 at bat, scored one run and hit in one RBI.
Chase Cramer and Alex Stone both went 2-for-4 at bat. Cramer hit a double and got one RBI, while Stone score one run and also batted in one RBI.
Newton had three pitchers against Mount Olive. Jimmy McKeown pitched two innings, Gianni Pereira pitched four and Young pitched three. Pereira had 74 pitches, Young had 47 and McKeown had 45.
Young and Pereira each had three strike outs, McKeown had one. Young and McKeown each hit one player, while Pereira and McKeown each walked four batters.
Pereira allowed one run scored off three hits with one error, Young allowed one run off one hit with no errors, and McKeown allowed four runs off two hits with two errors.
Newton, with an overall record of 16-3 and a conference league record of 6-0, will begin the 2018 NJSIAA North 1, Group 2 tournament as the second-seeded team behind top-seeded team Pascack Hills and ahead of third-seeded team, Mahwah.
