NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School boys baseball team advanced to the quarterfinals after winning over Lenape Valley 1-0, only to lose to River Dell 8-0 on Thursday.
Newton entered the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 tournament as the second-seeded team. They played against 15-seeded Lenape Valley in round one and advanced to the quarterfinal round, where they played seven-seeded River Dell and lost.
Chase Cramer went 3-for-4 at bat against River Dell’s pitcher Ted Loquet, while Billy Carson went 1-for-3, Gianni Pereira went 1-for-4, Alex Stone went 2-for-3, and Luke Young went 2-for-4.
Jake Tarabokija and Robbie Ford each pitched for Newton against River Dell. Ford pitched 2.2 innings, walked one batter, struck out one and allowed three hits. His total pitch count was 34.
Tarabokija pitched 4.1 innings, struck out four, walked four, and allowed eight runs off seven hits, with eight errors. He had a total pitch count of 87.
Stone and Tarabokija, along with Dylan Testa led the Braves in their victory over Lenape Valley to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Testa went 2-for-2 at bat and walked once, but also pitched a full seven inning game. He allowed five hits, struck out three and ended the game with 68 pitches under his belt.
Tarabokija went 2-for-3 scoring the winning run for Newton, along with stealing two bases throughout the game.
Stone came out on top batting 1-for-3, hitting a double and securing the one and only RBI for Newton, which allowed Tarabokija to score and lead the Braves to the next round.
The Newton High School boys baseball team ended their season as the leaders of the NJAC- Freedom conference with a record of 16-4 overall and a league record of 6-0.
